Discover more about Mount Shasta City Park

Mount Shasta City Park, a 26-acre urban park, serves as a vibrant hub for recreation and community events in the city of Mount Shasta. The park's most notable feature is the headwaters of the Sacramento River, emerging from Big Springs at the base of Big Springs Hill. This crystal-clear water, filtered through volcanic rock for over 50 years, offers visitors a taste of nature's purity. Historically, the land was once hunting grounds for the Wintun, Okwanuchu, and Maidu Native American tribes. In 1901, Big Springs was harnessed with a water wheel to provide Mount Shasta City's first source of energy, powering the street lights. From 1920 to 1943, the park was used as a summer campus for California State University, Chico's Teacher's College; several buildings from this era remain in use today. The park was deeded to Mt. Shasta City in 1947 and then to the Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District in 2005. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, picnicking, and biking. The park features picnic tables, benches, playground equipment, and nature trails. Several buildings, including the Upper Lodge, Lower Lodge, and Dance Hall, are available for rent and community events. The park also hosts the Mt. Shasta Senior Nutrition Program, offering dinners for senior citizens. The park's trails meander along Big Springs Creek, showcasing native plants, local wildlife, and towering trees. The headwaters area features a viewing patio, benches, and pathways, making it a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike.
