Napa Valley Opera House: A Historic Jewel

The Napa Valley Opera House, located in the heart of downtown Napa, is a testament to the city's rich artistic heritage. Opened on February 13, 1880, with a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore, the opera house quickly became a premier entertainment venue, hosting vaudeville acts, musical performances, and notable figures like John Philip Sousa and Jack London. Designed in the Italianate style by Newsom and Newsom, the same architects who built the Carson Mansion in Eureka, the building boasted a stained-glass skylight, brass chandeliers, and a curved staircase.After closing in 1914 due to earthquake damage, the decline of vaudeville, and the rise of film, the building served various commercial purposes for over 70 years. However, a community effort in the 1970s saved the opera house from demolition and paved the way for its restoration. The renovated opera house reopened in 2003, and now features two distinct music venues: Blue Note Napa, an intimate jazz club, and the JaM Cellars Ballroom, a larger space for diverse musical acts.Today, the Napa Valley Opera House continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, offering a diverse program of events and performances. Visitors can enjoy world-class music, theater, and comedy in a beautifully restored historic setting. The opera house also contributes to Napa's lively downtown scene, attracting both locals and tourists.
