Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral, or Catedral de la Virgen del Carmen, is the main Catholic church in Puerto Montt, Chile. Located in the central Plaza de Armas, the cathedral serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Puerto Montt. The building was initially blessed as a parish in 1892, after Vicente Pérez Rosales ensured a prime location for a church when the city was planned. In 1939, Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Puerto Montt and elevated the church to cathedral status. The cathedral's architecture features a neoclassical style, with a frontis that includes four Doric columns reminiscent of the Parthenon. The main structure is constructed with native woods, forming a beam system supported by 12 larch wood columns. The interior is known for its pleasant colors and good lighting, creating a serene environment for prayer and reflection. The stained glass windows depict biblical scenes, casting colorful light across the nave. Over the years, the cathedral has undergone several repairs and restorations, notably in 1941 and the 1960s due to damage from the 1960 earthquake. A significant interior restoration was completed in 1975, with the most recent intervention occurring in 2002. Today, the cathedral remains an active place of worship, holding daily Eucharist celebrations and serving as a cultural hub for community events and concerts.
