  • Driving

    From US 160, 14 miles east of Alamosa or 5 miles west of Blanca, turn north onto CO 150 and proceed for 13.5 miles to the intersection with Six Mile Lane (CR 6N). Turn left onto Six Mile Lane and drive west for 8 miles to the park entrance on the right. Alternatively, from CO 17 just north of Mosca, head east on Six Mile Lane for approximately 8 miles to the park entrance on the left. Parking is available in paved and unpaved areas. There are no fees for parking.

San Luis State Wildlife Area (SWA), formerly San Luis State Park, is a captivating destination located near the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. This unique area boasts a diverse landscape encompassing San Luis Lake, smaller ponds, extensive wetlands, and saltbush flats, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Originally a state park attracting visitors since the 1920s, it transitioned to a State Wildlife Area to better manage its valuable wildlife habitats. San Luis Lake, when full, spans nearly 900 surface acres, offering opportunities for boating and fishing. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, particularly during spring and fall migrations when shorebirds, gulls, and ducks congregate. Keep an eye out for elk, black-tailed jackrabbits, and other wildlife that roam the area. The SWA provides a range of recreational activities, including camping at the established campground. With electrical hookups, fire grills and tables, it's a comfortable base for exploring the area. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during established seasons, offering opportunities for big game, waterfowl, and small game. Hiking and biking trails provide access to the diverse habitats, with the northern section of the wildlife area closed from February 15 to July 15 to protect nesting birds.
