Discover more about La Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena

La Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena, or Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, is an enchanting escape into Costa Rica's unique cloud forest ecosystem. Located 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the town of Santa Elena, the reserve sits at a higher elevation, offering breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere. Established in 1992, the reserve was born from the community's desire to preserve the cloud forest and support local education. The reserve protects over 300 hectares (741 acres) of land, characterized by a persistent, canopy-level cloud cover that provides a constant supply of moisture. This creates a perfect environment for a wide range of tropical plants, including epiphytes, mosses, lichens, bromeliads, and orchids. The intense competition for growing space results in a verdant jungle, with plants covering every surface. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve boasts well-marked hiking trails, catering to various skill levels. The trails, totaling 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), wind through the dense forest, offering opportunities to spot diverse wildlife, including over 400 bird species and 120 mammal species. The reserve also features a 360° observation tower, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Popular trails include the Encantado Trail and the Youth Challenge Trail, known for their viewpoints and cloud forest scenery. The reserve is managed by the Santa Elena Technical Professional High School, with entrance fees contributing to the protection and management of the reserve, as well as providing higher quality education for the schools of Monteverde. This makes the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve an excellent example of community-administered conservation.
