    The Landsbókasavnið is located on J.C. Svabosgøta, on the fringe of the center of Tórshavn. From the Steinatún bus station in the city center, walk southeast on Gongin towards Vaglið, then turn left onto Niels Finsens gøta. Continue onto J.C. Svabos gøta; the library will be on your left. The walk is approximately 5-10 minutes. There are no costs associated with walking.

  • Public Transport

    Tórshavn's red city buses, operated by Bussleiðin, serve the municipality. Check the Bussleiðin website for the most up-to-date routes and schedules. The bus routes are free. From the bus station, several routes will take you close to the library. Get off at a nearby stop and walk a short distance to J.C. Svabos gøta. The ride is approximately 5-10 minutes, followed by a short walk.

Established in 1828, it is considered the Faroe Islands' oldest cultural heritage institution. The library's building, designed by J.P. Gregoriussen, dates back to 1980.The library holds a comprehensive collection of Faroese literature, aiming to preserve the nation's written heritage. It also functions as a central library for the Faroe Islands and a research resource for scholars. The library's collection includes manuscripts from Faroese authors and older manuscripts, such as an edition of Sandoyarbók, on loan from the Royal Danish Library. These manuscripts contain some of the oldest copies of Faroese ballads about Charlemagne.Landsbókasavnið also provides an audiobook service for individuals with visual and reading disabilities and manages public lending right fees. The library hosts various events, including book launches and exhibitions, to promote local authors and artists. With the planning of a new campus for the University of the Faroe Islands, there are intentions for it to also become a university library.
