Discover more about Pont Saint-Bénézet

The Pont Saint-Bénézet, better known as the Pont d'Avignon, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an iconic symbol of the city. Constructed from the 12th century, legend says a young shepherd named Bénézet, inspired by a divine vision, was tasked to build a bridge across the Rhône River. Completed in 1185, it was the only crossing between Lyon and the Mediterranean. Originally spanning 900 meters with 22 arches, the bridge connected Avignon with Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It served as a vital trade route and a border post between the Kingdom of France and the Papal State in the 14th century. The bridge was repeatedly damaged by floods and was finally abandoned in the 17th century. Today, only four arches remain, offering a glimpse into its former glory. Visitors can explore the remaining arches and the Chapel of Saint Nicholas, built on the bridge's second pier. The chapel once housed the relics of Saint Bénézet. Audio guides are available in multiple languages, providing historical context and insights into the bridge's significance. The bridge is accessible to people with motor and mental disabilities.
