Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery stands as a testament to the heavy losses suffered during the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916. In this disastrous battle, the Australian 5th Division and the British 61st Division attacked German positions, resulting in thousands of casualties. The cemetery is located near Pheasant Wood (Bois Faisan), where the Germans buried the fallen. The cemetery was constructed between 2009 and 2010 following the discovery of mass graves in 2008. It is the first new war cemetery built by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) in over half a century. The cemetery is the final resting place for 250 soldiers, including Australians and British, many of whom were unidentified until DNA analysis was conducted. The design, by Barry Edwards, incorporates manageable gradients and ramped access to the Cross of Sacrifice terrace, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. The hexagon shape is centered on the Cross of Sacrifice. The cemetery was officially dedicated on July 19, 2010. Today, the site serves as a place of pilgrimage for those wishing to pay their respects to the soldiers who fought and died in Fromelles.
