Discover more about Devil's Bellows

Devil's Bellows is a captivating landmark nestled on Windmill Hill Road in Gibraltar, offering a compelling blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Originally, the Devil's Bellows may have been the name of a ravine that separates the upper slopes of the Rock from the southern plateau of Windmill Hill Flats. Later it probably became the name of the tunnel that leads to the entrance to Windmill Hill from the north. The name derives from the naturally windy conditions of the area, facing the open south, where the funnel-like entrances and exits act as wind tunnels. Historically, the Devil's Bellows was part of Gibraltar's extensive military fortifications. The area was strategically important, and the British military constructed tunnels and batteries in the vicinity. In 1842, the roads were made and the surface leveled of this heretofore rugged hill by the voluntary labor of Her Majesty's VII th Royal Fusiliers. The site provided a vantage point for defense and surveillance, playing a role in Gibraltar's maritime history. Today, visitors can explore the area and appreciate the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. The rugged cliffs and unique rock formations create a dramatic landscape, perfect for photography and contemplation. The site is accessible year-round, inviting tourists to hike along the paths, enjoy a picnic, or simply soak in the tranquil atmosphere away from the bustling tourist spots.
