4.7

Fira, the modern capital of Santorini, is perched on the edge of the island's stunning caldera, about 260 meters above sea level. Its name comes from a mispronunciation of 'Thira,' the island's ancient name. The town's history as a settlement began in the late 18th century when residents abandoned Skaros due to earthquakes. Fira subsequently replaced Pyrgos as the island's capital in the early 19th century. Fira is the cultural and commercial heart of Santorini, offering a mix of traditional architecture and modern amenities. Whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and narrow alleyways create a picturesque setting for visitors to explore. The town is known for its stunning views, vibrant nightlife, and a wide array of dining and shopping options. Key attractions in Fira include the Archaeological Museum of Thera and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which showcase the island's rich history. The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral are also notable landmarks. From Fira, visitors can take a cable car down to the Old Port or embark on boat trips to the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni. The town also serves as a hub for exploring the rest of Santorini, with frequent bus connections to other villages and beaches.
