The American Gothic House Center in Eldon, Iowa, welcomes visitors to experience the world of Grant Wood's iconic 1930 painting, *American Gothic*. The house, also known as the Dibble House, with its distinctive Carpenter Gothic window, served as the backdrop for Wood's masterpiece, now one of the most recognized paintings in American art. The American Gothic House Center enhances the visitor experience. The center features exhibits about the history of the house, Grant Wood, and the *American Gothic* painting. Visitors can watch a 30-minute documentary or a shorter cartoon version for children. A gift shop offers souvenirs and Iowa-themed gifts. One of the most popular activities is dressing up in provided costumes and posing in front of the house with a pitchfork to create your own *American Gothic* portrait. The house was built in the early 1880s by Charles and Catherine Dibble. Grant Wood sketched the house in 1930 during a visit to Eldon. He found the Gothic window amusing and “pretentious” for such a small house. Wood completed the painting in his Cedar Rapids studio. The State Historical Society of Iowa acquired the house in 1991. The American Gothic House Center opened in 2007. The exterior of the American Gothic House is accessible year-round. The interior is open on select dates or for pre-arranged group tours.
