Discover more about Passeggiata del Giappone dell'EUR

The Passeggiata del Giappone dell'EUR, or Japan Promenade, is a unique and tranquil space located in the modern EUR district of Rome. This area offers visitors a serene escape with a touch of Japanese culture. The promenade is famous for its numerous cherry trees, a gift of 2,500 trees from Japan to the city of Rome in 1959 by then Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, commemorating renewed friendship and cultural exchange. These trees, of the Prunus serrulata species, transform the park into a breathtaking vista during the Hanami season, typically from mid-March to early April. Hanami, the traditional Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers, especially cherry blossoms, is celebrated here with picnics and strolls beneath the blooming trees. The delicate blossoms symbolize fragility, rebirth, beauty, purity, loyalty and honesty, adding a layer of meaning to the experience. The Passeggiata del Giappone is located within the Parco Centrale del Lago, also known as Parco del Laghetto dell'EUR, surrounding an artificial lake. The park itself was designed in 1936 in anticipation of the 1942 World's Fair and later completed by architect Raffaele De Vico. The lake was finalized in time for the 1960 Rome Olympics, where it hosted the rowing competitions. The area is rich in diverse tree species, including oaks, poplars, magnolias and maples. The Giardino delle Cascate, a garden with waterfalls, is another highlight.
