Visit the Basilica of Saint Margaret in Cortona, a neo-Gothic masterpiece housing the saint's relics and offering stunning Tuscan views.

4.6

Perched on a hill just below the Fortezza Medicea, the Basilica of Saint Margaret of Cortona dominates the landscape with its neo-Gothic architecture. This sacred site, dedicated to St. Margaret, the town's patron saint, offers visitors a unique blend of spiritual reverence and artistic appreciation. The basilica's history dates back to the 11th century when a small oratory dedicated to San Basilio was erected by Camaldolese monks. Damaged during the siege of Cortona in 1258, it was rebuilt in 1288 under the guidance of Margaret of Cortona. In 1330, the citizens of Cortona constructed a larger church in her honor, which was then completed. The basilica has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in the 18th and 19th centuries, resulting in its current neo-Gothic style. Inside, visitors can admire the silver casket containing the incorrupt body of St. Margaret, located above the main altar. The basilica also features a 13th-century wooden crucifix, said to have spoken to St. Margaret, and a marble sarcophagus depicting the saint. While many of the original frescoes have been lost, fragments can be found in the Diocesan Museum. The basilica's interior reflects a blend of Gothic and Romanesque influences with Baroque embellishments. Beyond its religious significance, the Basilica of Saint Margaret offers stunning panoramic views of Cortona and the Valdichiana valley. Its elevated position provides a perfect backdrop for reflection and appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty.
