Discover more about Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio, located just outside the historic center of Montepulciano, is a breathtaking example of Renaissance architecture. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, construction began in 1518 and lasted until 1545, though Sangallo himself did not live to see its completion. The church is considered his masterpiece and one of the most important monuments of 16th-century Italian architecture. The sanctuary was built on the site of an ancient early Christian church dedicated to St. Mary, and later to St. Blaise. Legend has it that the construction was spurred by a miraculous event in 1518, when two women and a peasant witnessed a fresco of the Madonna and Child with Saint Francis come to life. The Virgin's eyes were seen opening and closing, leading to the decision to erect a new church as a sign of religious devotion. Pope Leo X supported the project. The church follows a Greek cross plan with a central dome supported by a drum. The exterior is clad in golden travertine, which changes hues with the sunlight. The main facade is divided into two sectors, featuring a portal with the foundation date and a window surmounted by a triangular pediment. The interior features Baroque decorations that contrast with the Renaissance symmetry. The marble altar houses a 14th-century icon depicting the Madonna with Child and Saint Francis. Though the design included two bell towers, only one was completed. Today, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio continues to attract pilgrims and art enthusiasts alike. Visitors can admire the architecture, explore the interior, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred site.
