Nestled in the heart of Jamaica's Nassau Valley, the Appleton Estate Rum Tour offers an immersive experience into the rich history and craftsmanship of Jamaican rum. As the oldest continuously operating distillery on the island, dating back to 1749, Appleton Estate has been producing world-class rums for centuries.The tour begins with a welcome cocktail in the air-conditioned visitor center. Guests then watch a short video on the history of rum and the Appleton Estate. The tour then moves to the beautifully landscaped grounds where guests take a multi-sensory journey from cane to cocktail and discover how Appleton Estate Rums have been crafted since 1749. You'll witness firsthand the traditional methods of extracting juice from sugarcane, learn about the unique distillation process in the company's 200-year-old pot stills, and visit one of the barrel houses, where the rums age to perfection. The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience has been revamped to provide a completely new visitor experience that includes modern rum tasting rooms, a new restaurant and lounge offering Appleton-infused Jamaican cuisine, and a new retail room. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the group size. Guests usually spend an average of two hours at the Visitor Center. Appleton Estate produces a wide variety of aged rums, as well as the standard golds and whites. The estate covers an 11,000-acre plot and makes about 10 million liters of rum per year. Sugar cane on the estate is harvested both by machine and in the old-fashioned way, with men wielding machetes.
