Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Nanyuki, which is a common entry point in the Mount Kenya region. From Nanyuki, take the A2 highway heading north towards Isiolo. Drive for approximately 90 kilometers (about 1.5 hours). After reaching Isiolo, you will continue on the A2 for another 50 kilometers (about 1 hour) until you reach the turnoff to Samburu National Park. Follow the signs to the park entrance, which is located at Waso. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for the terrain, as some roads can be rough.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, you can catch a bus from Nanyuki to Isiolo. The buses are frequent and the journey takes around 2 hours. Once you arrive in Isiolo, you can take a local matatu (shared taxi) heading towards Samburu National Park. The matatus will take you to the park entrance at Waso. Be prepared for a further 1-hour ride from Isiolo to the park. Ensure you check the matatu schedules as they can vary.
Private Shuttle
Another option is to book a private shuttle service from Nanyuki or Isiolo directly to Samburu National Park. This can be arranged through local tour operators or hotels. The cost can vary, typically ranging from $100 to $200 depending on the distance and the number of passengers. This option provides a more comfortable and direct route to the park.
Air Travel
For those looking to save time, consider taking a domestic flight to the nearest airstrip at Samburu. Flights are available from Nairobi to the Samburu airstrip. After landing, you can arrange for a safari vehicle to take you to the park entrance. This option is faster but more expensive, with flight tickets typically costing around $200 to $300 one way.
