Discover more about Church of St Anne

Located in the heart of Birgu, the Church of St Anne stands as a remarkable example of Malta's rich ecclesiastical and cultural history. The church is located within the walls of Fort St Angelo, a historic landmark. The origins of the building are shrouded in mystery, but records from 1274 reference a church dedicated to St Mary in the upper area of the stronghold. The oldest parts of the current building date back to the 15th century.Initially dedicated to St. Angelo, the church's dedication changed after the Order of St John arrived in 1530. Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam enlarged the chapel in 1532 for his personal use. It briefly served as the private chapel for the Grand Masters before the Order moved to Valletta. Over the centuries, the church has been modified and expanded. The architecture reflects a medieval style. The church has an aisle and a side chapel. The facade features a cornice supported by corbels, a round-headed door, and an oval window.Throughout its history, the Church of St Anne has served various purposes. It was once used as an artillery magazine, armory, and even a school. In 1935, it was reconverted into a place of worship, first for the Anglican community and later as a Catholic church. Today, the Church of St Anne stands as a serene landmark, inviting visitors to explore its historical and spiritual depths.
