Discover more about Arlington (Natchez, Mississippi)

Arlington, located in Natchez, Mississippi, is a historic mansion that embodies the grandeur and complexities of the antebellum South. Built in the early 19th century, likely between 1816 and 1821, the mansion is believed to have been designed by John Hampton White for his wife, Jane Surget White. However, some accounts suggest Jane's father, Pierre Surget, may have also influenced the design.Arlington is one of the four most important Federal Style villas, which established the basic form for later antebellum houses in the Natchez area. The mansion features a sweeping central hall, flanked by two rooms on each side, with a staircase located in a secondary hall. The property spans 55 acres and was once known for its beautiful gardens, including azaleas and live oak trees.Over the years, Arlington passed through several owners, including Mississippi Supreme Court Judge Samuel Stillman Boyd. The house was filled with treasures, including French antiques, Old Master artworks, and a vast collection of rare books. In 1973, Arlington was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1974, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.Unfortunately, Arlington has suffered significant damage over the years. A devastating fire in September 2002 destroyed the roof and much of the upper floor. Today, the mansion stands abandoned and in disrepair, a poignant reminder of its former glory. Despite its deteriorated state, Arlington remains a captivating site for those interested in history and architecture.
