Getting There

  • Bicycle

    From the center of Kampala, head northeast towards Jinja Road. You can rent a bicycle from various rental shops in the city. Follow Jinja Road until you reach the junction with the Kampala-Jinja Highway (A-404). Turn left onto the highway. Continue cycling along the highway for about 54 km. You will see signs for Mabira Central Forest Reserve. Look for the entrance which is located off the highway, on your right. The forest is well marked and you can park your bicycle at the entrance.

  • Public Bus

    Make your way to the main bus terminal in Kampala, known as the New Taxi Park. Look for a bus heading towards Jinja. Once you find one, board the bus and pay the fare, which is usually affordable. The journey to Jinja will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Tell the conductor you want to stop at Mabira Forest Reserve, and they will let you know when to get off. The bus will stop at a junction near the forest entrance. From the bus stop, you can walk a short distance to the entrance of the reserve.

  • Motorbike Taxi (Boda Boda)

    If you prefer a quicker option, you can use a boda boda (motorbike taxi). Go to a busy street in Kampala, such as William Street or Nakivubo, where you'll find many boda boda riders. Negotiate the fare to Mabira Central Forest Reserve, which should be around 30,000 to 50,000 UGX, depending on traffic and distance. The ride will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Ask the rider to drop you off at the entrance of Mabira Forest Reserve.
