Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours

Discover the spectacular La Plata Canyon (20 minutes West of Durango) and its beautiful U formation created by glaciers on one of our Colorado jeep tours. Several small waterfalls and cascading rivers follow the rugged jeep trails in the springtime along with lots of wildlife such as marmots, mule deer, elk herds, juncos, kingfishers, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. On our guided jeep tours you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Then, you’ll continue to the peak of Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line).

My wife and I took the Jeep tour into La Plata Canyon on October 19th. There was only our Jeep and there was one other couple in it. It was a total blast. We were lucky in that there was virtually no other traffic on the tour. The scenery was great. We saw waterfalls, forests, mountains, fields. We also saw a group of deer right in the middle of the road. Our driver/guide, Jay, was great. I don't know if you can request guides but if you can I highly recommend him. He asked what we wanted to see/do. Both the other couple and us had actual cameras so he said "looks like you want pictures". He took us all over and would stop any time we wanted to take pictures and would maneuver the Jeep as needed for us to get the exact shots we wanted. We are from Arizona and this was our first visit to Durango. We plan to return and definitely want to do another Jeep tour with Mild to Wild and Jay if we can. We hope to come in rafting season as well and do one of those trips too. As for the Jeep ride, it goes from pavement, to off road to REALLY off road so be prepared to hang on but that is part of the fun. The Jeep is going to kick up dust so wear something you don't mind getting a bit dirty. Also everything is going to get dust on it, so make sure you can cover things you need to keep clean. If you bring a camera like I did, keep the camera bag closed when not in use if you bring one and make sure you have a lens cover between shots to keep the glass clean if you have one as well. I also know it depends on the time of year you go, but we had on tee shirts most of the trip but going thru some canyons on the way back that sit in the shade you could feel the temps drop like 10 degrees in seconds so bring a light jacket as well. Enjoy!

Trip was great. Safe equipment, Ben was great driver and we enjoyed. If we could have left one lady at the base I would have scored it a 10. They can’t help who their customers are.

Tosh was a great guide!! He shared lots of interesting information about the mountains, mining history and local history. The drive up on the rough gravel roads was fun and bumpy! We stopped at interesting points including old mining buildings, a waterfall, and scenic views. Excellent trip!

The morning excursion to 11,800 feet was breath- taking (most literally). It proved to be the true highlight of 10 days of varied activities in the region. I recommend it to everyone as a "must-do."

We were blessed with a dusting of snow. So, the entire trip was like a fairytale of glistening beauty. Glistening pine trees, waterfalls, historic places and Silverton, all with a fun way to experience it all!! Our guide,Jay, was awesome. His love of the area was infectious. Highly recommend as a 1/2 day fun and ride the train back to Durango. A whole day on the train is too much.

Mild to Wild jeep tour guide (Tosh) was the best driver and guide. We saw beautiful scenery and heard interesting info. from TOSH. The jeep tour was the BEST part of our short stay in Durango. We had lots of fun with Tosh and others in our group. The staff (Codi ) was very helpful in planning our jeep tour and told us step by step details how to book the Durango train. We did the jeep tour in the morning out of Silverton and rode the Durango train back after we had lunch in Silverton . NOTE: We weren't able to book the train car we wanted before we left OKC. However, Codi helped us with getting the train ride back to Silverton. I think riding the train one way up or down is sufficient.
