If you ever dreamt of being invited to a dinner party at a Manta Ray’s home – this is your chance! What a unique and memorable experience to be able to see these gigantic, graceful creatures in their own environment. It surely does make you feel like a guest and appreciate the magic of the ocean so much more! Check in was seamless (you get your wetsuits and snorkels), the staff and crew were great – fun and very accommodating. The whole experience is about 1 hour and the boat ride to the Manta Village is only 5 minutes each way but come prepared if you do get seasick -you will be floating in the water for 45 minutes (unless you decide to get up on the boat early which is an option). We saw 3 different Mantas, it was amazing! The crew did a great job of navigating the flotation devices to improve the chances of seeing Mantas while communicating with the guests and giving fun points and facts about marine life and the location. Even though Manta Rays are the main event, watching the plankton illuminated in the dark water was a wonderful sideshow – there is so much life! I would definitely do this again! One more side note - I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone with any shoulder issues, or anyone who cannot hold their arms above their head for extended periods – you will be essentially floating superman style holding on to a flotation device the whole time, call the Dolphin Discoveries to see if they offer the same experience with less swimming or check out other options available.

We arranged an evening snorkel with manta rays on New Year’s Eve (12/31/23) at 7 pm via our hotel concierge at the Outrigger. After arriving, getting fully kitted out (wetsuit, snorkel, etc.), and waiting for our boat to arrive, we received text messages that the weather was too bad and the trip would be canceled. The weather seemed fine to me (warm, tropical, a little blowy, no rain but occasional sounds of thunder or fireworks in the distance). But still: if the trip would be dangerous, fair enough. Problem is, the same boat launch serves several other tour companies offering the same manta ray snorkel experience. And every one of those other tours went out as scheduled. So my family got to watch a half-dozen other tour groups see the manta rays up close while we sat at the Outrigger Hotel’s manta ray viewing deck instead. It should come as no surprise that the weather didn’t change appreciably between the 7 pm cancellation and the ringing in of the new year. That was our last night at the Outrigger and we’re not likely to be back in Kona any time soon. So that’s a “once in a lifetime” opportunity missed, either because the Dolphin Discoveries captain perceived a risk that no other captain saw ... or just maybe because he wanted to get his New Year on a little early. I guess we’ll never know. But whatever the reason, it was deeply disappointing. Hopefully the Outrigger has moved to a different and more reliable vendor.

Our recent adventure with Dolphin Discoveries' Manta Ray Tour was a breathtaking experience! The highlight, undoubtedly, was the chance to see the majestic manta rays in their natural habitat; it's hard to put into words the beauty and grace of these magnificent creatures; watching them glide through the water with such effortless elegance was a truly mesmerizing sight. What made the tour even more remarkable was the exceptional professionalism and friendliness of the captain and crew. They were happy to share fascinating facts about the manta rays and the ecosystem, greatly enhancing our understanding and appreciation of these incredible animals. I recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to witness the beauty of Mother Nature up close.

The Manta experience off the Big Island is an absolutely amazing experience and there are many tour operators offering it. Just don't choose Dolphin Discoveries. While they covered all the basics, the crew was absolutely rude and negligent. I had a problem with one of the straps on my snorkel mask. They offered me another one which had the same problem. When I pointed that out I got berated for "breaking" it and then the staffer on the boat and the boat captain pouted and shook their heads while they found me a working mask. What was worse, while in the water, a woman across from me was having a terrible time and was panicking. The guide seemed completed unaware of her situation so I spent a lot of time in water trying to reassure this poor woman. The crew could have easily gotten her back onto the boat. To be clear, the rays are magnificent and were the highlight of our trip, but choose another operator that respects it guests.

We saw many Manta’s. I like hearing about each Manta. Our Guide Doc was happy to give us history on the Manta’s he could identify. Even though Doc was in training, he made our experience better. Likely because he was excited about his job and still had wonder for these truly majestic creatures!

The crew was amazing and worked to give us the best experience possible! If you do anything on the big island, do this!

Staff are nice. I feel safe and we saw lots of Mantas, big and close. Very well organized. Thank you so much!

Amazingggg experience! The manta rays were putting on a show for us. The boat captains were also very knowledgeable and helpful! We had a blast.

The mantas were amazing! There were 4 or 5 swimming around right underneath us. Very cool experience! Would be 5 stars if they had been on time and if they had stopped the teenage girls from screaming every time a manta came close. The screaming got old pretty fast and took away from the experience for the rest of us.
