So intimate and interesting. You can see Hopper paintings when you visit museums but this experience gives you a close up of his life and his connection to the community. The information about his life and relationships and the importance of his wife Jo were all new to me. Our guide made the experience even better and the town of Nyack is charming.

If you are a Hopper fan, a trip to his birthplace and childhood/ancestral home is an obligation. The house museum has been open for 50 years, and it was on my bucket lists for decades. There is not a lot of original artwork exhibited, but you get a feel for the space he grew up in. His bedroom was teeming with winter sunshine on our visit, and one could see how a painter of shadows and light would have absorbed a lot from living in that room. The docent Ilene (Eileen?) explained that the neighborhood is different from Hopper’s young years when an orchard grew all the way to the Hudson which afforded Hopper a panoramic view that has disappeared. There is a movie to watch about Hopper and a gift shop with some choice merch. We made a whistle stop visit due to our schedule, but I am glad that this house is still standing and giving testament to the environment that shaped one of America’s best 20th century artists.

Well this was just delightful. A warm, compact history of Edward Hopper's early life and work, lovingly curated in the house he grew up in. And an art workshop for the kids upstairs. A little gem, not to be missed.

This was our second visit to the Edward Hopper House in Nya k ,NY. This time we brought family from abroad. They were very enthusiastic about our visit. We viewed the 28 minute Video, narrated by Steve Martin which added to our enjoyment and taught us a lot about the artist and what influenced him.Edward Hopper HouseAlthough the Hopper House has few originals, the house itself, hostesses and overall ambiance are unique features of the tour. We left with souvenirs and plan to see more originals in NYC.

This house/exhibit brings Edward Hopper to life. So interesting and real. Easy to visualize his life and inspiration in that house, and in that village.

We’d booked a visit for Monday, August 7 at 11:00. We waited for 45 minutes but nobody came to open the door despite the appointment we had . So disappointing ! Coming all the way down from France and waiting in front of a closed door is certainly not enjoyable.
