Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. Jess and Rob were great and energetic guides! My partner and I had such a wonderful time. We learned a lot about the volcano, and the surrounding geology. Plus Rob was an astronomy expert and it was awesome seeing through the telescope. They gave us plenty of snacks and warm beverages, and the coats they provided were so comfy! I definitely would recommend this tour.

We loved the tour from the moment we were picked up by Jess. She and her husband were so fun and knowledgeable about the area and history of Hawaii. They were amazing guides and made us feel part of a family. The drive up was so exciting and marvelous to experience. Once we got to the top to see the sunset and then stars was breathtaking. The little snack bag made us feel like children which we really enjoyed.

We had a wonderful tour to Mauna Kea. The tour guides were very informative and the sights were stunning! My favorite was the star gazing and star talk. It was very informative learning about the Hawaiian star lines.

Our guides were extremely well informed, respectful, and professional. It was worth every penny! stargazing would have been impossible to do independently.

Our trip to Mauna Kea with Rob and Jess was nothing short of spectacular! From the moment we embarked on our journey, their enthusiasm and expertise made the experience unforgettable. Rob's extensive knowledge of the area and its history added a rich layer to our adventure, making every moment educational and fascinating. Jess's warm and welcoming demeanor made us feel like we were exploring with close friends rather than tour guides. The highlight, of course, was reaching the summit of Mauna Kea. The breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment were incredible. Rob and Jess ensured we were well-prepared and safe, and their passion for the natural beauty of Hawaii was truly infectious. Watching the sunset from the summit and stargazing afterward was an experience we'll cherish forever. Rob's insightful commentary on the constellations and Jess's astrophotography made the evening perfect.

Best experience! Our guide Blaze was awesome. Very knowledge about the telescope, sights and stars . We saw tons of stars!!! Be prepared to stay above 9000 get for about 3 hours, but only 3 minutes at 13,000. Great snacks. Please, if you go, be respectful of the dark sky and bring a red light to see and turn down your cell phone screen. You need a while for your eyes to adjust to the darkness to see everything! Amazing! You have to do this!

Our driver Kyle and his buddy Zack were fantastic tour guides. Kyle shared his incredible knowledge on cultural sites, Hawaiian history, the environment and weather, the planetariums etc. from the minute we left the parking lot and he didn‘t shy away from any question we asked. He was a safe driver and took care of everyone on the tour at all times. We couldn‘t stay high up to stargaze due to the gushing winds on the summit, and still we had the best sunset experience we could possibly have had on that day. The stargazing experience was phenomenal. Both Kyle and Zack were highly knowledgable about Greek and Hawaiian star constellations and made watching the stars such an incredible experience. I was very grateful that Kyle outlined the arguments for science vs. culture in an unbiased and respectful way, which made us leave this tour highly educated in every aspect. 100% recommend!

The actual trip up the mountain with tour guide Tay was really good. He knew a lot, took his time to explain things and both sunset and stargazing were fantastic. It‘s definitely worth doing! What keeps this trip from getting five stars was the beginning of the trip: it was unclear that we‘d get picked up by a big bus and then be taken to a transfer point were we‘d hop into 4x4 busses. The bus driver didn‘t make that clear until 45 minutes into the bus drive, while generally being very quiet which one could mistake for in-politeness. Overall, that caused a bit of dissatisfaction among our tour group that could have easily been avoided.
