The mountain was the high light. Due to a company or driver error we had to backtrack many miles to pick up a tour participant and our time in transit was, probably, increased by an hour or so. The vehicle itself was cramped and crowded. Our driver/tour guide provided only very limited commentary and seemed to have only limited knowledge of our destination. Some of his comments about the mountain itself were of questionable accuracy. Before our last tour stop our driver informed us that it was time to tip him, told us how much we should tip him, and insisted on collecting his tips before starting to drive us back. This process felt coercive.

*sigh* I really don’t want to leave a review like this when much went right, but after my experience I feel it necessary to do so for other potential customers to make their own decisions. First, the positives about booking through Trip Advisor: very simple and easy to do with clear communications about the purchase, cancellation policy, when I would be billed, etc. The day before our visit, I received a text message from someone purporting to be our guide with some information about where to meet to be picked up. A few hours later, I had another message from another guide saying they would be driving. A little concerning but I thought “okay, maybe the first person got ill or something” and we continued with our visit in Seattle. We knew from reading about Rainier that dining was limited and that we should bring food and water. We spent time the night before buying food, water and snacks and packed our bags like we were doing a hike. We report to our rendezvous point on time and are met by our guide who seems to be a little on the young side. She gestures towards a line of vehicles and I remarked, “are we taking a shuttle to an actual bus?” No, we’re told this is the tour vehicle. Five guests and one guide in a Honda minivan. Our guide ushered us into the minivan and announced to everyone that we’ll stop for 20 minutes at a grocery store along the way for supplies. If we had been made aware that was part of the trip, we wouldn’t have spent time or money the night before. Off we go and from the backseat I immediately have concerns as our guide is driving above the speed limit but seems very nervous merging or overtaking other vehicles. At one point she has to swerve to avoid a collision. There was a steady drizzle the entire way up there. My wife who is seated in the front made small talk asking if the guide made this drive a lot and the guide responded she did not and that she didn’t drive very much because she was at college. When we reached the grocery store, I honestly thought about abandoning the tour to take an Uber back to the city. After the 20 minute stop, we get back in the minivan and resumed the drive. Because we weren’t encouraged to introduce ourselves to the other guests at the beginning, it felt awkward until we all mutually started conversation to pass the time. We eventually reached Rainier and while it was beautiful there was very little from our guide about the area other than some nominal facts that anyone who was interested in visiting would already be aware of. After the first stop, we were each handed a peanut butter granola bar and a little bottle of water. If anyone in our group had a peanut allergy, they would have been disappointed. We made three stops at the mountain; 10-20 minutes at a nature center, 20 minutes at the waterfall and then two hours at Paradise. Again, that part was great with some beautiful views despite the weather. We were invited to eat lunch inside where there was food available but I’d put it on par with a food court at best, gas station at worst. For each stop, our guide just stayed in the minivan and let us explore on our own. We were unable to see the peak due to a snowstorm but that wasn’t the tour company’s fault. For the return we were encouraged to nap and I realized why as the guide drove like she had to get the minivan back in time or else she was going to get grounded. Seriously, I looked up and saw the reflection in her driver window that she was doing nearly 60 in a 40 mph zone. At one point I felt the need to tell her from the rear seat to brake because someone pulled out in front of her while she was fiddling with her phone to play you tube videos for music. I picked this tour based on reviews where people talked about how great their guide was with anecdotes and information about the mountain. I didn’t see other reviews where people had experienced what I had until after we got back. While our guide was very nice, the entire experience felt like someone’s niece was tasked with driving out of town family members for the day. The final clue was when we got out our guide told my wife to leave a review but gave another company’s name. So I don’t know if Jupiter Legend got bought out and the new owners are trading off an old company’s reputation or they just use several different names and hope you don’t notice. For the price paid, I can’t recommend this experience. If you’re there in the off-peak season, for less money you can rent a car, pay an admission fee at Rainier and take your time to marvel at some breathtaking nature without worrying about your safety.

The guide was excellent, the trip amazing!!! A lot of beautiful places to see and take a great picture!!!

Comfortable ride, excellent driver and guide. Not much to see due to snowfall, wind. We wish we had known that this trip would be empty handed, the purpose to see mount Rainer was only limited on pamphlet. People who had not seen snow before loved the snow.

Great views and stress-free tour experience. Our experienced tour guide Jennifer was very knowledgeable about the park and Seattle. Her bubbly and friendly personality made the trip much more enjoyable and educational.

Chen was a superb driver/guide. On-time pickup. Pulled out the sliding step to make it easy for me to board the van. Stopped at grocery for all of us to buy lunch since Mt. Rainier had no food outlets. Then, in the national park, stopped at three spectacular overlooks. Happily took our pictures and passed out waters. These small actions were extras but so appreciated. At the visitor center, we had the option to hike. The visitor center was closed so we walked and others hiked up in the snow. Chen took care of all of our varying needs - sit in the van, walk a little, hike a lot, more water. Another rest stop before headed home (deeply appreciated!). BUT then: two very unpleasant minutes. As we prepared to leave, he asked to collect the “service fee.” He said it was on the website: $12 minimum per person. It is NOT on Viator’s website or the instructions from Jupiter Tours. Viator says “gratuity not included.” We normally tip heavily for a 9-hour tour with courtesies and information all through it. We did not, this time. If he wants to impose a service fee, we of course will pay it. The whole tour experience was terrific. Service, information, and sights.

It was a delightful experience to venture beyond the confines of Seattle and immerse myself in the resplendent beauty of the natural world.

It was a super bad experience. Our guide, I don’t think he’s a real guide, he’s only a driver knew nothing about the national park, have us 0 info about anything on the way or in the park. We get to the national park and he tells us the paradise loop is shut and we will be at the longmire museum for 2 hours. Per the itinerary we were supposed to be at the museum for 20 mins then see a waterfall and then go to paradise. Paradise is the main place to go and that was closed. The tour operator should have informed us & cancelled the tour. It was a horrible experience, waste of money and then I even had to tip.

Duan was a wonderful guide. Pickup went smoothly and he was very communicative. Duan was so kind, helpful, and knew a lot about the mountain and area. He knew the best spots for good photos and was adamant about keeping us all safe which was fantastic. Highly recommend this trip !

We did not get to do what we paid for. Our guide was not suitable for the trip, she knew it would snow, didn't know how to put tire chains on her tires, after we helped with chains, and asked strangers to help, we learned that the chains were not for her car's tires. Wasted time, stressed and didn't get to explore. Disaster of a trip. I cannot belive that these guides are not trained with basic job skills required to take tourists exploring during winter. Beyond disappointed.
