You cannot fail to be impressed by this imposing cathedral and the history behind it. The welcome is warm and the stewards informative and chatty. There is so much to see and process. Memorials, tombs and the huge architecture. Do spend some time at the shrines of Beds and St Cuthbert, as well as appreciating the stained glass. To complement our visit we called into the cafe where we were served a lovely latte and a huge jam and cream scone, delicious and every bit homemade. A voluntary donation is requested and we were happy to donate, it was such a wonderful experience for a small amount of money.

On a week's holiday in Newcastle Upon Tyne my twin brother Stephen and I decided to jump the train down to Durham and check out this pretty town and we weren't disappointed. The two major tourist sites are Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral but there's so much more ,walking along the riverfront and you can view some amazing buildings, there's also pretty and ancient bridges that cross the River Wear, add to this the amazing amount of pubs, bars and restaurants and you have a great town to explore.

A quaint city to visit with lots of shops, bars etc. A good river walk as well as views of the cathedral and castle. Clean and tidy on the whole and places well signposted.

Walking up the streets of the old town of Durham to the Palace Green, the site of Durham Cathedral, the Bishop's Castle, the Cathedral Library and other historic buildings is an experience in itself. The winding, hilly streets prepare you for the sight of the great Gothic cathedral. But go inside - and if you can join a guide tour of the cathedral. Led by an enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteer, this is the best way to appreciate the architecture and history of the building.

Durham is a unique and always delightful city. From the river Wear down below to the magnificent Norman Cathedral and castle on top of the steep hill, with the university all round, it is surprisingly small yet seems surprisingly big. The Cathedral is breathtaking in its size, beauty and treasures, and dominates the city from wherever you look. Lots of good hotels and shops. A fabulous city.
