Valley of the Fallen

Valley of the Fallen is a Francoist regime monument, Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid. Franco claimed that the monument was meant to be a "national act of atonement" and reconciliation. The construction works mainly involved free workers and a smaller, albeit significant, percentage of prisoners, these between 1942 and 1950, under the regime of redemption of sentences.

Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Arriba is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, located to the northwest of the region in the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 kilometres (29 mi) from Madrid. It is head of the same name judicial party. The settlement is popularly called El Escorial de Arriba, to differentiate it from the neighbouring village of El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Abajo. Felipe II ordered the construction of this Monastery in recognition of the victory of San QuintĆn, which took place on the day of San Lorenzo in 1557 and is from the King, to erect a mausoleum in memory of his parents and himself, placed under the invocation of Saint Lawrence.

The review is for the tour company, Fun and Tickets. We missed it, unfortanately. The instruction in the app was checking 8:30 am and departs at 9am, we got to the meeting point a little before 9, we got stuck in traffic, another unfortunate event, and surprise, no bus. There was a representative from the tour company, fun and tickets and we were told the bus left, half an hour ago, but they were ready to charge us 30 euros/person if we want to reschedule to the next day. We showed them that in the app it says departs at 9 and we did make it to the meeting point before 9 but nope, bus left at 8:30 they said, they should have made it clear in the app that 8:30 was the departure. But anyway, we ended up just walking around Madrid. So yeah, just beware of this company.

Excellent interesting tour of El Escorial and Valley of the Fallen. Our tour guide Christina was outstanding. Although she has, no doubt, led this tour many times, she never sounded as though she was repeating material. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what we were seeing. If only there were more guides like her

A well organized trip. Informative tour guide sharing some interesting stories on the history of the Monastery. I wish they had devoted more time in the monastery rather than a visit to the Valley of Fallen (too much controversy with that location, not a good chapter of Spanish History)

The library in the Escorial and the church in the mountain. Christina was our guide. She was very nice and introduced every site to us.

This is a very unique historical spot, which was why we chose to go, and it answered our curiosity and continuing amazement at history here in Spain. And the Valley of the Fallen memorial was a huge surprise we had heard nothing about.

What a great trip! Half day is ideal. The Escorial is fascinating, beautiful, and worth the trip. What was surprising however was the Valley of the Fallen. We knew nothing about it and didn't give it much thought beforehand, considering that it was just an add on of sorts, and we weren't particularly excited about looking at yet another cross. Yet it's considerably more than that--a massive basilica sunk into the hill beneath the cross. As a bit of contemporary church architecture and given the reason for its construction, it's impressive and awe inspiring. Worth the trip. And it looks like there are hiking trails in the area as well. Finally, Sergio did a fine job driving the massive bus and our guide Christina was great. She was relaxed, knowledgeable, organized, clear in her communication, and humorous. Having a good guide is of course important, and Christina was fabulous-- highly recommended.
