For 15 years I had been wanting to go to Plum Village France. I have been a long time follower of Thich Nhat Hanh. It saddens me to post this review but I also feel like it needs to be out there. Let me start with my arrival at New Hamlet. As one of the arrivals that walked through the gate that hot day in July 2022 and was not greeted or acknowledged by any of the nuns that were sitting in the shade chatting with each other. No one got up from their chair and said "welcome to Plum Village, how was your journey are you hungry or thirsty?" That was my first impression of New Hamlet. It did not get any better from there. The accommodations were .5 miles away from the facility and we had to walk it sometimes three times a day in 100 degree or greater weather. The accommodations were dirty and not cleaned for new arrivals. I am not a novice retreatant and I am accustomed to barren and bare bones minimalist environment but I draw the line at unkempt and dirty. We had to bring our own linens, pillows and towels from wherever we were coming from. I was coming from California. The food selection was minimalist vegan. Again I am accustomed to this but eating simple carbohydrates with now healthy fats, or alternative plant based proteins and very few healthy vegetables and fruits did not seem balanced at all to me. Eating pasta twice a day or rice twice a day and farina or oatmeal for breakfast is anything but healthy. The food was served buffet style and every person had their hands on every dish and every fork and spoon for serving the food. It was anything but safe during a pandemic. There were definitely people coughing sneezing and blowing their noses and hardly anyone was wearing a mask. The cannot do anything about the weather but the old farmhouse that we bunked in had no overhead fan and definitely no air conditioning. The room had no window only a door that opened to the road, did not lock and was the only way we could get any air. Therefore, we left the door open at night and let all of the mosquitos and mice in. Not their problem but there was also a big rave techno concert going on in the valley and they played techno music from 4pm in the afternoon till 4am in the morning for 4 nights which made it near to impossible to sleep. The retreat was more like a day camp for adults and children then a Buddhist retreat where it is peaceful, silent and meditative. In the time I was there which was almost four days there was only one dharma talk and one lesson about the mindfulness trainings. Really I cannot think of any upside to my visit to New Hamlet Plum Village. I decided to cut my trip short when I was awakened by the smell of smoke at 4:45am one morning and a red sky due to the fires in Bordeaux. Again not their fault. The morning that I left 3 other senior women left the house we were in and to my knowledge no one from Plum Village called us or asked what happened to us till this day. I will continue to follow Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings. However, I will not return to Plum Village or it's sister facility in Escondido Deer Park.
