This is something I’ve heard about for years but learned the actual history on this tour. Make sure you’re ready for LOTS of circular stairs! You climb down and up 20 meters!

Our guide was personable and provided interesting insight outside of the catacombs to prepare us for our trip down there. It was 130 steps and I’m not in the best shape lol but it was fine. After the guide leaves you, the catacombs provides you with an audio player with headphones to guide you during your tour. It is such a unique and sobering experience. It is hard to wrap your mind around the fact that all of those bones were someone’s mother, father, brother, sister, child, etc. Hard to believe there are over 6 million bodies down there. It’s sobering but also a morbid fascination. You do see that it was done with respect. We went down with a guest in our tour group who was claustrophobic, so she was nervous but did fine. I, too, felt claustrophobic when I got down there, even though I do not have that phobia, but it passed. Coming up was a bit of a challenge because it was a spiral staircase but it was less stairs than going down. There was a bathroom and a gift shop on the way out. I’m glad we did this tour. We visited catacombs in Rome but it was an entirely different experience, as all remains had been removed.

It was nice to get some history before heading into the catacombs. Like other reviews say, the guide doesn't go with you in the catacombs, but provides an overview prior to entering.

The catacombs were great all the guide does is hand you tickets and tell you about what you will see everything he said they tell you in the audio guide...basically don't expect much from the guide

The Catacombs are a must see of Paris. Our guide, Ben, gave us a detailed story of Paris and how the Catacombs came to be. It’s a surreal experience walking through an underground labyrinth surrounded by the bones of more than 6 million Parisians that date as far back as the 9th century. Make sure to book in advance as this is a popular site with limited daily availability.

Interesting info about catacombs presented by live guide before going down into them. My family learned a lot. It was great to be able to not wait in a long line to enter the catacombs. Once down in the catacombs, my family liked the self-guided pace of the audio-tour device to listen to when desired. It was a great paced-experience for all. (2 adults, 1 pre-teen). The stair climb out of the catacombs are similar to the kind of climb one does to go up the Arc de Triomphe or to hike up the various staircases of the Montmartre/Sacre Coeur region of the city. You’ll get a great work out in visiting the catacombs.

Honestly some members of my family were not certain how to approach. Our tour guide Ben was fabulous. Informative, passionate about this unique subject, and entertaining. We had timing issues due to a strike in the city; Ben could not have been more accommodating. The outdoor convo before entering the museum were great. His efforts were much appreciated. Bravo Ben!
