The Bergisel is a hill in Innsbruck; it's a nice beauty spot from where fantastic views can be contemplated. There is a huge ramp for holding ski jumping competitions. The ramp was designed by the architect Zaha Hadid and was inaugurated in 2003 to replace a smaller one which didn't meet the new ski jumping requisite requirements. The ski resort lies in an exhilarating part of the city of Innsbruck. Four battles fought in 1809 between Tyrolean rebels under the command of the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and the Bavarian troops took place in the Bergisel area. A monument dedicated to that hero erected to commemorate the battles stands on the spot. About that particular personage, on the other hand, two fantastic pictures are displayed in the Innsbruck Zeughaus Museum: a portrait by Jakob Placidus Altmuter and that one depicting Hofer's execution in Mantua. The Bergisel Ski Jump is an architectural masterpiece. Apart from the ramp, there is a large stadium, to wit, the Olympic Ice Stadium, as well as the Tivoli Stadium. Many sport events take place in that ice complex, it being one of the most important winter sport facilities in the world. The Olympic ski jump has already been held three times in Bergisel, namely in 1964, 1976 and 2012. In addition to the sport facilities concerned, there is a restaurant on the top of the architectural structure. That restaurant has a terrace from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Innsbruck and of the landscape on the other side of the terrace. In order to accede to the restaurant and terrace it's necessary to take a funicular-like elevator and then a lift up to the restaurant level. During the elevator trip one can start enjoying the every time more wonderful view. Once on the terrace the view is, as stated above, breathtaking. From there it's possible to see the splendid Wilten Basilica and the Wilten Abbey, as well as other fantastic buildings lying further in the city center, such as St. James's Cathedral, the Jesuit church, the Hoffburg, and in general most of the Innsbruck historical center. The visit to Bergisel and particularly the trip to the mentioned terrace is thus thus highly recommendable if only to have the possibility to contemplate such an enchanting sight.
