Your Itinerary

Mozart Residence (Mozart Wohnhaus)

The house where Mozart lived from the age of seventeen. We are going to see the house and talk about it from the opposite side of the square. Here we will also find out why Salzburg is known as the "Rome of the North".

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

We are going to take a glance at Mirabell Garden and find out what it was in history and what it is today but you should come back after the tour to explore the garden in more detail.

Getreidegasse

After crossing the river we get to Getreidegasse, the most famous street in Salzburg, and walk along to reach Mozart's birthplace.

Universitatskirche

The University Church was the last historic building in Salzburg. It's not used as a church anymore. Therefore, we can and will enter the church as a group as long as it's not closed for some reason.

Wilhelm-Furtwängler-Garten

Furtwänglerpark was a monastery garden and nowadays is a part of the Salzburg University. The University, modern art, and the canal system of Salzburg are what we will talk about before moving on to the Concert Hall.

Grosses Festspielhaus

The Salzburg Festival is the most prestigious festival for classical music in the world. The Concert Hall is where most of the concerts and the opera take place during six weeks in summer.

St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter)

Saint Peter's is the place where Salzburg was founded in 696 and the oldest monastery in the German-speaking region. We are not entering the church or the beautiful cemetery of Saint Peter's Abbey because the monastery and the church is still active and guided tours are not allowed but we visit the yard of the monastery and I will tell you everything about I know about it.

Salzburg Cathedral

The Salzburg Cathedral is the most important church in Salzburg. We will not enter the Cathedral, but you should come back after the tour to have a look inside. On the tour, we will just admire the facade of the cathedral and learn about its history.

Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme

From Kapitelplatz square we get a view of the Hohensalzburg fortress, more modern art, and the oldest bakery of Salzburg.

Makartsteg

We pass the river at the love lock bridge of Salzburg where we talk about the love locks, the bridge, the river, and the buildings along the river.

Residenzplatz

Residence Square is the main square and the heart of the old town. The square is called Residence Square because that's where the archbishop's residence was located in history.

Mozartplatz

Mozartplatz square is where the Mozart cult began in the 19th century when they erected the Mozart statue. We will have a look at the statue and reveal some of the mystery surrounding Mozart.

Very informative and interesting tour yesterday with Sonja who was a great guide. Learnt so much from her. My wife had to miss the tour as she wasn’t well so today I showed her a few sights from the tour and thanks to Sonja I was able to give my wife valuable info. Don’t worry Sonja - I won’t be taking your job! Highly recommended.

Our family joined a free walking tour of Salzburg old town with Leo, which was excellent and remarkable that it’s free. Leo added a more nuanced perspective to Salzburg which we wouldn’t have had ourselves, e.g. the book monument to 1938 events, the bells near a concert hall, the men on the golden globe story, the churches, the reconstruction post WWII, etc. Thoroughly enjoyable and very much recommend. Thank you, Leo!

Leo was an amazing guide. He was a wealth of information about Salzburg and presented this in a really interesting and fun way, encouraging involvement by us and making a point of answering all of our questions. Also loved the way he did the Jedermann call in front of the Dom. He obviously enjoys his job and made everyone feel welcome by personally chatting with them as we walked from one point to the other. We have done quite a few free walking tours and this is the best one we’ve ever experienced. Thank you, Leo, for teaching us so many interesting things about Salzburg and for your free postcard and information brochure and also your recommendations about where to eat and what to do during our stay.

Wonderful tour by Johannes. He weaved a rich, easy to follow story with interesting details but always with a clear narrative arc - not an easy thing to do by any means. The perfect introduction to Salzburg.
