About Australia Day

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia and is observed each year on the 26th of January. This celebration marks the landing of the British navy at what we now know as Sydney Cove in 1788 and raising of the Union Flag. Today the celebration reflects the modern history of this great nation, it’s diversity and its present status on the world map.

As a national holiday there are many public events including outdoor concerts, community barbecues, sports competitions, parades, boat races, festivals, and fireworks across the whole of Australia including major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  

Many Australians head to coast to spend the day on the beach; and it is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends. With so many Australian people living abroad there are also celebrations as far away as London, Dublin, and Singapore.

Classic Australian catering is often seen as having a good barbecue with sausages, shrimps, steaks, kebabs, and lamb chops.
