The perfumer Johann Maria Farina named the famous fragrance after his chosen place of residence: Eau de Cologne. This founded the success of the Farina perfume dynasty. In the 18th century no patent rights existed and many copycat versions of the perfume quickly appeared on the market. Due to these incidents, the Eau de Cologne is designated today as a perfume category. Art related artifacts, photos, and furniture are evidence of the worldwide connections to the Farina perfume dynasty. You can smell a variety of different essences at the museum. Detailed descriptions from the extraction of essences to the development of perfumes from flowers, for example clearly convey the effort, creativity, and irrefutable talent of this perfumer. The general guided museums tour (in English) leads you down the stairs and into the original arched cellar where the fragrance has been produced for about 300 years. A barrel made of cedar from the time of the company’s founding has withstood the test of time can also be seen. The replica of a still, just like the one Johann Maria Farina would have used in the 18th century concretely shows the complicated art of distillation. Photos show the development of perfume production over the last 300 years.

Wonderful! Fantastic! Informative! Small groups attend this extremely interactive and informative tour of three levels in the perfumery. The tour guide was absolutely passionate and full of information. I am so sorry I cannot remember her name--she was from Italy and truly loved her job! The building is historical and the shop is the quintessential Parisian/ Perfumery boutique--but its in Germany! The staff is friendly and helpful. I did not want the tour to end!

Our guide was animated and really took what could have been a dry subject and made it interesting. It was about 45 min and I had to run across the street about halfway through to take my 6 year old to the bathroom. They were kind enough to let me rejoin the tour where we got back. -You cannot take pictures ANYWHERE inside. - There are no bathrooms. - This your involves steps and there is no elevator. - Not recommended for those under 8. - Not recommended for those sensitive to smells. It was fascinating to learn about how and why eau de Cologne was made vs how they create perfume today. You also get to bring home a small bottle of the scent.

I didn't realise the tour needed booking but the were able to fit us in the following day. This is strangely good fun, informative and interesting. The little Italian lady host is excellent. We got a 4ml freebie at the end. I would recommend this as a great way to spend an hour
