This tour ended up being way more than we ever could have asked for. Costas gave us an intimate tour of the city like a true Athenian. A perfect balance of culture and food (we were STUFFED!) we saw corners of the city we never knew existed. The food (and the people serving it) were authentic and were a great representation of this beautiful city.

We are a family of four (2 adults and 2 children- ages 6 & 9) and we booked the Athens Food on Foot “Athens Family Food Tour” based on the enthusiastic recommendation of our neighbors. It was 249 euros total for all of us. I found the price a bit high, especially for the children, but was willing to give it a chance since it came recommended by a family with 3 children (preschool, elementary, middle). Our guide Kostas was friendly, prompt, and organized. I love to cook and eat so I asked Kostas a lot of questions and he graciously answered them. We followed the emailed directions from Athens Food on Foot and skipped lunch, arriving very hungry for the 1:45 PM tour (this tour lasts 3 hours- we ran over 3 hours- perhaps because of an extra nut stop or because we walked slowly?) Our first stop was Fresko for a little cup of Greek sheep milk yogurt with honey and walnuts which was delicious. I would have loved to learn more about the history of Greek yogurt. Unfortunately, there was about 1 hour of walking until the next stopm (at 3:00 PM) which is a sesame seed circle bread called koulouri. We walked through the neighborhood Anafiotika. My husband and I thought maybe we would eat some dolmas in a little house up there- we weren’t quite sure why the tour went up there- but no. Of course, it is a beautiful area with an amazing view and Kostas kindly took our photo. I was under the impression we would stop for a small bite to eat about every 20 minutes. I didn’t realize we would walk for a whole hour without a stop, and then eat a proper meal at the end of the tour. That’s fine- I simply would have planned the morning differently had I known. So, I would absolutely not start the tour hungry if you have children under age 12. I would eat a light lunch beforehand- some salad, some fruit, a small cup of soup…something. I enjoyed stopping for the bougatsa. That was very tasty- a phyllo dough with savory or sweet fillings- we chose one with ground beef and carmelized onion, and another with sweet custard. I would go back to that cafe to try other flavors (chicken, leek, spinach). I also enjoyed stopping at the local cheese shop. We tried 5 different types of cheeses and this was fascinating- the cheeses were all various percentages and combinations of sheep, goat, cow milk. Other westerners in the shop asked Kostas to help them translate or buy cheese, which was fine, but it did add a bit of extra time to our tour. We walked through the meat and fish market, and I didn’t care for this as the ground was a bit wet and dirty. We liked learning about the squid though. I asked to buy some Greek pistachios, so we took a detour to a nut shop- and we tried some nuts and Greek liqueur called mastiha. I was glad to try everything and the shopkeeper was patient. The prices were of course better here than in Plaka. Finally, we arrived to the meze restaurant for our late lunch. Kostas ordered for us, which was great. We tried octopus, fried calamari, cold orzo with tomato and olives (I’d like to make this at home) , zucchini fritters (fluffy and light - very tasty!), fresh potatoes (chips/fries), chicken breast chunks, fava (chickpeas mixed with mashed potatoes which was surprising to learn), local sausage, saganaki (the fried salty cheese) with our choice of beverage- wine, beer, juice, etc. We were full by the end and it was a great way to end the tour. Actually, this wasn’t the end (it was for me b/c I was too full for dessert). Kostas took us to an ice cream roll shop- not Greek, but a sweet that the kids enjoyed. I wish we had a chance to try Greek coffee. I also would have liked to try more little dishes throughout the tour, instead of loading them all up at the end. This tour seemed like a normal, solid food tour- not necessarily one aimed at children- which is fine. I’m glad we had the chance to take a Greek food tour and look forward to eating and cooking more Greek food. Thank you Kostas!

Highly recommend this tour to get exposed to all the great food in Athens! Our guide was very knowledgeable and great with the kids. My daughter has a nut allergy and he made sure everything was safe and she had plenty of food to try.

We had a great morning with our guide Evangelia! She is kind and funny and lives right in the city center where she tours. The food was amazing. Don’t eat anything before you go. You will need much room in your stomach :)

This was the best food tour I’ve been on as an adult — added benefit, the children loved it too! Our guide Eva was outstanding and made us feel right at home. She introduced us to wonderful tastes of Greece as well as different neighborhoods and scenes along the way. I absolutely recommend this tour for all. It will be a highlight of your Athens visit. Enjoy!

This was the best way to see the city and try authentic Greek food!! Our tour with Anna was a dream. She got our jet lagged 10 and 13 year olds laughing and by the end of the tour she felt like family. Would 1000% recommend.

Super accommodating, we were able to easily reschedule when out flight was delayed. The perfect way to start our first visit to Greece.

Eva was beyond wonderful. From the start she was warm, funny, knowledgeable, and easy to connect with. Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious. The parents really appreciated how much she connected with the kids and got them to participate and be curious. You have a remarkable guide on your staff. I will recommend her to everyone I know coming to Athens.
