Your Itinerary

Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo

Built around 123 A.D. as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family, Castel Sant'Angelo has had an atypical destiny. While all the other Roman monuments were swept away, reduced to ruins, or used as “quarries” to be recycled into new, modern buildings, Castel Sant'Angelo – through an uninterrupted series of developments and transformations that seem to slip into each other with seamlessly continuity – accompanies almost two thousand years of the fate and history of Rome. Its proximity to Saint Peter's Basilica, plus its strategic position at the north entrance of the city and its closed and imposing body, made Castel Sant'Angelo center of political interests From funerary monument to fortified outpost, from dark and terrible dungeon and prison during the Risorgimento to splendid Renaissance residence and now to a museum, Castel Sant'Angelo with its solemn, strong walls and sumptuously frescoed rooms embodies the history of the Eternal City, inextricably linking past and present.

This was really fun to explore! My husband and I are both history buffs, and the Castel Sant’Angelo has an amazing spread of history. Amazing views at the top! We both highly recommend a visit.

We booked the tickets in advance of going ,but did so on line and direct with the facility which was cheaper and allows you to skip any clues Anyway to the castle itself ‘ASTOUNDING’ is an understatement Having walked around the base of the castle which is amazing in itself .Off we trotted to the inside gradually working our way to the top ,the intervals were again amazing ,but when we got to the top what a view over Rome absolutely astounding and although we didn’t use it,there is a cafe built into one side of the top floor The internal rooms and decorations are truly a site to be hold Will def visit again next time we are in Rome

The castle is way underrated. One of our favourite stops in Rome - the artwork and rooms are beautiful and the views from the top sublime! Stop for a coffee on the top deck - you will not be disappointed. Buy your ticket online (only €1 extra) in order to skip the line!

We only had one full day in Rome so didn't want to spend hours waiting at all the sites - A family member suggested this place and I'm so glad. Not costly and no line up. My mom and I had a fun time spending over 2 hours walking around - so much to see. So worth the money - we are so glad we choose this place. A must see for anyone visiting Rome and don't want to spend hours in line.

It’s important to note that even in the heaviest tourist months you don’t need an expensive or “Skip the line”ticket. Get there when it opens at 9AM and buy a $13.20 ticket then get ready to climb some stairs. It's a beautiful fortress and when you understand that in 1277 a 800 meter fortified corridor or tunnel was built to connect Vatican City to the Fort in case a pope ever needed it, the fortress becomes amazing ( only Pope Clement VII in 1527 ever used it). Also the top has a fantastic view of Rome!

This place is special due to its location, the views to the vacatican City really good. Very well organized, and the price is right.

This place is very beautiful and nice. There weren’t much people and we can visit it very calm. But the day was very hot.

On what was my seventh visit to Rome, I was determined to finally get into the Castel and firmly strolled up to the ramparts! Why is the ticket box closed? What? Closed on Mondays?? Damn, it appears the fates have decreed I am never to darken the Castel's doorways! Still a very impressive looking Castle with a long history, so I will admire from outside again!
