Giardini di Augusto

They were initiated by Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the German steel industrialist who bought some properties on the island at the beginning of the twentieth century, with the intention - which he did not realize - of building a villa there. Known as Krupp gardens until 1918, after the First World War they were renamed gardens of Augustus by the city administration, in honor of the first Roman emperor. They constitute a true botanical garden that houses various specimens of the island's flora, with ornamental and non-ornamental plants. To the botanical beauties, we associate a very wide panorama on the main beauties of the landscape of Capri. In fact, you can get a 180-degree view of the island of Capri, with views of Mount Solaro, the bay of Marina Piccola, via Krupp and the famous faraglioni.

I Faraglioni

(Pass by)

The faraglioni of Capri are three rocky peaks positioned to the south-east of the homonymous island, famous all over the world thanks to the evocative and historical overview offered by the gardens of Augustus. These emergencies are identified with three distinct names: the first (joined to the mainland) is the Faraglione di Terra; the second, separated from the first by the sea, is that of Mezzo; while the third, reaching out towards the sea, is the Faraglione di Fuori. The latter is very well known as it is the only habitat of the famous blue lizard.

Piazza Umberto I

The square, located on the edge of the historic center of Capri, once housed the ancient local market; today it is the center of the social life of the island and is often called a «living room of the world», so much so that it is often compared to squares such as the Rossio of Lisbon or the Venetian San Marco.

We went on this tour in October, booked via the TUI representatives office in Sorrento. The cost was €112 per person. Pick up from near our hotel was at 2.50pm and as we were the final two couples to join the mini bus it was only a few minutes transfer to the port. On arrival we met with the tour guide, Ugo, and several other groups arriving by mini bus until the gathering eventually grew to around 50 adults. I must admit the numbers were greater than we’d expected. Only a few guests had dressed very smartly for dinner and bearing in mind the itinerary I’m glad that we didn’t. Unfortunately a couple were missing and whilst we killed time Ugo tracked them down and we eventually departed on the 3.50pm ferry to Capri. The ferry was quiet by normal standards and we were able to get good views from the open deck seating for the 20 minute crossing. At Marina Grande, Capri we transferred to a boat chartered solely for our group and as it was a decent size we had the opportunity to get good seats on the open upper deck. The cruise around Capri lasted roughly one hour and took in many of the well known sights. There was plenty of opportunities to get good photos as we sailed very closely up to the entrance of the Green Grotto, past the Natural Arch and Blue Grotto and even through the hole in the Faraglioni Rocks with a metre or so to spare each side. Ugo provided informative and at times witty commentary throughout - very personable guy. Back on land we were given a bit of time to grab a souvenir at Marina Grande prior to being transported in a taxi convoy up to Capri Town. Our guide provided some details and strolled with us through the main shopping area prior to letting those who wanted to carry on exploring whilst a few of us took up the invite to go with him to the Caesar August Gardens for a sunset view over the Faraglioni Rocks. We had about another one hour to spend wandering ourselves before meeting up for a meal at Ristorante Isidore. This was an option suggested by Ugo and as we hadn’t found anywhere with a romantic atmosphere (this was end of season even in Capri) we joined most of the group. The meal was not the candlelit affair we’d intended but a fun atmosphere was provided by one of the waiters who was a dead ringer for Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame. Again there was some time to spend as you wished and we got an expensive drink in the main square before heading back by the local mini buses to port. Another chartered boat took us back across to Sorrento as by this time the ferries had stopped running - it was a fairly quick trip and I doubt if anyone left the main inside cabin other than to use the toilet which I’m informed was an experience as the boat bounced off the waves! In Sorrento taxis collected us to return to the various hotels and we were back by around 10.45pm. It was probably a seasonal issue but we didn’t find Capri by night to be particularly atmospheric (many restaurants were empty) and there were a few rough and ready looking characters hanging around the narrow lanes which made it less tempting to explore. My wife did see a young version of George Cluny being filmed in one place and had her hopes raised briefly! The round island boat trip was for us the highlight.
