Your Itinerary

Basilica of Santa Croce

Start the tour in the main square, where the famous soccer game played in medieval costumes, the Calcio Storico Florentino, takes place here every year in June. Your guide will describe in detail of all the immense artistic wealth in Santa Croce; frescoes (1380) by Gaddi in the Cappella Maggiore tell the story of "Santa Croce", and beautiful frescoes by Giotto in the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapels show scenes from the life of St. Francis and St. John the Evangelist. On your way to the left of the entrance, see the memorial of the 19th-century playwright Giovanni Battista Niccolini built as an inspiration for the Statue of Liberty. As you walk through the hallowed walls, learn about the art of Donatello and his crucifix, one of the jewels of the Renaissance, as well as the art of Brunelleschi and the perfect architectural harmony of his Chapel of Fools.

We missed the tour because we arrived too late (our fault not knowing how to get a taxi). The tour guide went out of his way to find us and give us tickets to enter and we went through on our own.

The church was beautiful and the guide provided a lot of interesting information. It did run longer than expected so I am not sure which parts might have gotten skipped if it was the right length and the very last thing was one of the most interesting.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable & enthusiastic, providing details well beyond our travel guides, all delivered with a sense of humor and wit. Highly recommended!

Guido was excellent , he was passionate, a great storyteller , knowledgeable and it was a great experience because the tour was just me and my wife. The church was gorgeous and there was so much history there, i'm surprised more people don't talk about this church. Michelangelo , Galileo and Machiavelli are all buried here. Me and wife were super impressed at Guido's breadth of knowledge and confidence at such a young age. One of the best things about this tour is it was one of the least crowded and shortest ones we did.

Guido was delightful and very knowledgeable. However, I think the tour was overpriced for what we got.

Hillary was excellent. She gave us enough info and kept a good pace. The church is a must see as it’s the gravesite of some of the most amazing individuals of all time.

We took a tour of Santa Croce with Dan Harper. He was great! The tour was Free. You pay for your ticket to the church and he asks for a small donation for the church. He gave a 2 1/2 hour nonstop tour and took pictures of each tour member with your phone camera. He has a wealth of knowledge and shares great stories and historical perspectives about the church and those buried or assumed to be buried in the church. Did I say the tour is Free. Dan can be reached at danharperflorence@gmail.com.

The tour guide is very knowledgeable and very punctual. She was very detailed in giving us information about the people buried inside the church.

My Santa Croce Church Tour was very good and I would highly recommend this tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the church, the artwork and the artifacts. This tour is a great opportunity to see a beautiful church, historic artwork and the resting place of many notable Italian individuals. Great tour.
