Piazza Santa Croce

Piazza Santa Croce is one of the main squares of the historic center of Florence, dominated by the homonymous basilica of Santa Croce. As the square is very large and regular in shape, in the Renaissance it became the ideal place for jousting, parties, shows and popular competitions, such as football in costume, which is still held every June.

Basilica of Santa Croce

The basilica of Santa Croce stands out unmistakably on the east side of the square, with its neo-Gothic facade built in the nineteenth century. Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the Franciscans settled in the city founding this church, which thanks to the funding of the important families of the neighborhood (the Bardi, Peruzzi, Circles, Alberti, Baroncelli.), became one of the largest and most beautiful basilicas in the city. Today Santa Croce is above all famous, as well as for its artistic equipment, for being the burial place of many Italian personalities and artists: Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli are among the most famous to be buried here. Even Dante should have been buried here, and a cenotaph was in fact realized, but the city of Ravenna, the last destination of the poet’s exile, was always firmly opposed.

Massive overload of wonderful craftsmanship. So many pieces to create, plan source materials and put together. Mind boggles!
