Your Itinerary

Basilica Cateriniana Di S. Domenico

(Pass by)

Meet your guide in front of the church of San Domenico in Siena at 9:30am, easy to find even if you are arriving from out of town with your own car, as there is parking in the vicinity. Travel south out of town on one of the most panoramic roads of Tuscany, through the characteristic moonscapes of the Crete Senesi.

Chiusure

Enjoy brief stops along the Crete Senesi for for photo opportunities before visiting a quaint, non touristic medieval hamlet. Continue along this stunning landscape and reach the UNESCO heritage site of the Val d’Orcia, where you come across some of Tuscany’s most iconic postcard pictures.

Historic Centre of the City of Pienza

Arrive to the beautiful, utopian renaissance town of Pienza, one of the first towns to be entirely planned out on paper by important architects of the time. These were called upon by Pope Pius II, the humanist pope who wanted to renovate his native town and bring it new splendor.

Il Duomo di Pienza

Spend your leisure time exploring the Romanesque church of Corsignano or the ideal, Renaissance Cathedral and walk along the scenic route overlooking the valleys and hills beyond. Browse the pretty streets of this gem of a town or some of its many shops of local crafts and products.

Val d'Orcia

Visit a val d'Orcia dairy farm for a wholesome and refreshing lunch based mainly on the fresh ingredients produced on the farm. Here you can learn about the pecorino sheep cheese making processes, visit the farm animals and learn about the lifestyle of the area. Weather permitting, lunch will be served on a panoramic terrace, overlooking the valley below.

Montepulciano

In the afternoon, visit one of the biggest and proudest of the Tuscan hill towns, Montepulciano. This town was first under the dominance of medieval Siena and then became an ally to renaissance Florence: here you can recognize the influences of both Republics in its architecture and art. Located on a steep hill, you can look over the ledge at the the Tuscany - Umbrian border.

Piazza Grande a Montepulciano

Visit the main square, Piazza Grande, and explore one of the many old wineries carved out of the ground below the city, and taste the Vino Nobile that was produced by the many important and noble families that one lived here. After a short walk around town with your guide, enjoy some free time on a second tasting of the Nobile wine or visit the town’s many stores, palaces, churches and streets. As you follow the main road down the hill, imagine how hard the “Bravio delle Botti” town festival must be: a competition between the neighborhoods of the town that race wine barrels from the bottom of the hill, all the way to the top. On some occasions the itinerary might vary a little. In this case, the tour could be slightly modified but will maintain a similar general imprint, of the same duration and with all the same inclusions.

This tour was great! Our guide Elio was knowledgeable and entertaining. It was a very relaxing way to see the countryside and to explore the 2 hill-top towns. The morning coffee stop and wine tasting at Montepulciano were a bonus. Outdoor lunch at the farm was enjoyable - great food and scenery! Thanks Elio!

Giovanni was a wonderful, informative and easy going guide. The lunch at Fattoria Madonna della Querce with the host Roberto felt like a very nice day out at the Tuscan countryside with old friends!

Travelling through beautiful scenery despite it being a dull and rainy day; visiting fantastic hill towns living up to, in fact surpassing, my expectations; morning coffee, lunch and wine tasting so enjoyable and all in the company of Matt, our hugely knowledgeable and entertaining guide. An excellent day!

This was an excellent tour of Pienza, Montepulciano, and Val D'Orcia (all unforgettable). The quick coffee stop at the quaint and quiet Chiusure was a pleasant surprise. The farm-to-table lunch at the sheep farm was delicious. We visited a wine cellar for a bit of wine tasting. And we also had enough free time to explore Pienza and Montepulciano. This tour was just well thought out and organized that we had a variety of experiences in one day. Our guide Giuliana was very knowledgeable, considerate, and personable (and an expert driver who parks at the tightest of spots without breaking a sweat). She doesn't just share facts but also engages everyone and gives us a glimpse of how everyday Italians live. We also stopped for photos of sweeping landscapes. But if there's one thing that would have made this perfect, it's making stops closer to the cypress trees and hilltop villas along the Val D'Orcia area. Overall, it's one of the best experiences we had in Italy. Highly recommended.

Our family LOVED this tour!! The towns we stopped at were amazing! Lunch was great and the winery was wonderful. Most of all, Elio was the best tour guide ever! Thanks, Elio for making the tour more fun than we could have imagined and a great memory of our first trip to Italy! I can speak for the whole family when I say I would definitely recommend this tour!!

We’ve been to the Tuscan region several times but mostly enjoyed the cities and larger towns. We’ve always wanted to tour the wine region and some wineries but driving a car and deciding on which stops to make and how to navigate it all was something we weren’t keen on doing ourselves.. Mission accomplished! We booked two full day tours and for this one Guillermo (Will) was our authoritative and fun guide. Courteous, simpatico and a wealth of information on the area, wines, culture, …you name it. We had originally booked these tours through a third party and when we needed to make changes to our itinerary we went directly to Tuscan Escapes staff who were so easy to work with. Montepulciano and Pienza are not to be missed. The Val d’Orcia is as iconic and beautiful as anything we’ve experienced. We would wholeheartedly recommend Will and Tuscan Escapes for the quality of tours they deliver. We still have a couple more tours we’d like to do the next time we’re in the region.

First of all, out guide - Guillermo, is a funny and friendly guy, with a passion for Italy, history and not only! 🥇 On this trip we visited a small town for coffee, then Pienza with the amazing views (here we took the lunch at a local farm with great pecorino selections, pasta and a delicious dessert). At the end of the trip we hit Montepulciano where we enjoyed the wine tasting and Guillermo was very kind to response to all questions that the group had about the wine, grapes, different kind of soils, olive. I highly recommend this trip! Big 👏 for the idea to do small groups!
