Chiesa dell'Isola di San Servolo

San Sèrvolo is an island in the Venetian lagoon. It is one of the islands closest to the historic centre of Venice. San Servolo is one of the oldest monastic settlements in the lagoon. From 1715 the island was used as a military hospital and in 1725 the first mentally ill person was admitted there. In 1797 Napoleon's government ordered that the insane of all classes be admitted to San Servolo, which thus became a lay-run asylum and military hospital.
