There are so many great reviews for Explore-Share that I’m sad and a little baffled to be sharing a negative one. We booked the “1+day via ferrata in the Dolomites” about 6 weeks out, the highlight of a vacation in Italy. However, we were disappointed. The entire experience lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes, not remotely close to the 6 hour average noted on the website, and felt dangerously rushed. Things started smoothly; Renato suggested the Sass de Stria via ferrata based on the info we provided and set us up with guide Richard. The night before the via ferrata, we got a message from another guide Matteo telling us that something had come up with Richard and he would guide us instead. No problem, things happen. He asked us to fill him in on what had been arranged. I told him the plan had been to meet at Sass de Stria at 9 AM. Matteo arrived sometime after 9 and began setting us up with equipment. We started the hike to the via ferrata and Matteo was very fast. By the time we got to the via ferrata portion I had fallen behind and asked if we could go a bit slower. Matteo said no, that it was important and better to go fast. So our family of four - brand new to via ferratas - raced up the via ferrata, passing the 2 others in front of us who seemed to be going a reasonable speed. We were told to move faster/not pause so as not to have room between Matteo and each subsequent climber. I do understand the need to keep close given we were all tied to one rope, but it was hard to be careful or enjoy the experience moving at such a fast pace. I slipped at one point, and nearly fell off the rock face. Shortly after we reached the top, I asked if we could explore the tunnels that were in front of us. We went through one short one, then headed back down to the parking lot, arriving about 2 hours after we left there. Matteo asked what we had planned for the day and I told him it it had been the guided tour, so there was obviously some disconnect. Matteo did give us suggestions for things we could do on our own, so we took his advice and headed to the chairlift at nearby Lagazuoi (this turned out to be an expensive day since we had not planned on needing to fill the day with additional activities). I emailed Explore-Share to share feedback concerning the experience, thinking perhaps there was some miscommunication between the company and the fill-in guide, or the guide was new to working with families, or maybe I misunderstood what was involved or miscommunicated what we were looking for. It’s now over 8 hours later on the same day and Explore-Share has not responded. We still had fun because the Dolomites are beautiful and via ferratas are cool. But if we had to do it again, we would use a different company or just rent the equipment and do the via ferrata at our own pace and for considerably less expense.
