Discover more about Monument of the Combatants of Haute-Garonn

The Monument of the Combatants of Haute-Garonne, sometimes referred to as "Toulouse's Arc de Triomphe" , stands as a tribute to the soldiers of the Haute-Garonne region who died in 20th-century conflicts. The decision to construct the monument was made in 1919, with a competition launched in 1920 to select the design. The winning project by Camille Raynaud was ultimately realized through the collaboration of Raynaud, Henri-Raphaël Moncassin, and André Abbal, under the supervision of architect Léon Jaussely. The monument, completed in 1928 , takes the form of a triumphal arch supported by eight tall stone columns. The structure is adorned with sculptures and bas-reliefs , with inscriptions of significant battlefields. Unlike traditional war memorials, this monument commemorates both the fallen and the survivors of World War I. The sculptures, created by Camille Raynaud, Henri-Raphaël Moncassin, and André Abbal, celebrate the bravery of French troops and the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France. Located on Allées Forain-François Verdier , near the intersection with Rue de Metz , the monument is a prominent landmark in Toulouse. In 2023, the monument was temporarily moved 35 meters to accommodate the construction of the François-Verdier metro station and is scheduled to be returned to its original location in 2027-2028.
