Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Lethem, the main town in Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo. Take the Rupununi Road (also known as the Lethem to Annai Road) heading southeast. Continue on this road for approximately 60 kilometers until you reach the junction for the Rupununi River. The river is well-marked, and there are signs along the way. The drive should take about 1.5 hours, depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, head to the Lethem bus terminal. Look for a minibus or 'tapir' that goes to Annai or the surrounding areas. Inform the driver that you want to visit the Rupununi River. The trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you should expect to pay around GYD 1,500 to 2,000 for the fare. Once you reach the junction for the Rupununi River, you may need to hire a local taxi or a motorcycle taxi to take you the additional distance to the river.
Taxi
If you prefer a more direct route, you can hire a taxi from Lethem to the Rupununi River. This option is more expensive but offers convenience. Negotiate the fare in advance; expect to pay around GYD 6,000 to 8,000 for a round trip. The taxi will take you directly to the river and wait for you to return.
