Discover more about Rocky Top Trail

The Rocky Top Trail in Lake of the Ozarks State Park is a popular hiking destination, known for its diverse scenery and moderate difficulty. This 2.2-mile loop showcases the unique beauty of the Ozark Highlands, combining open glades, wooded areas, and dramatic lake vistas. The trail begins near the Grand Glaize beach area, close to Osage Beach. The path descends towards the water, offering easy, flat terrain ideal for a leisurely start. As you continue, the trail ascends to one of the largest glades in the park, managed with periodic fires to preserve its natural integrity. Historically, these dolomite glades were shaped by fire and grazing animals, but they're becoming increasingly rare as cedars encroach. Beyond the glade, the trail winds through native Ozark woodlands, characterized by white oaks, bluestem grass, and asters. The path crosses a ravine and ascends a north-facing slope, leading to dolomite cliffs that provide breathtaking views of the Lake of the Ozarks. The trail consists of two loops; after approximately half a mile, hikers can choose to complete the shorter, one-mile loop along the lakeshore or continue for another 1.5 miles to the scenic overlook. The longer loop is considered moderate in difficulty, with some rocky sections and minor hills.
