Asok connects with the MRT Blue Line at Sukhumvit station, making the area accessible from several parts of Bangkok. Visitors arriving from Suvarnabhumi Airport can use the Airport Rail Link towards the city and change to the BTS or MRT, while taxis and airport transfers provide direct road access but are vulnerable to congestion. Check the exact station for the soi or hotel, since Sukhumvit’s linear layout covers a considerable distance.
Getting Around
The BTS is the practical backbone for moving between Sukhumvit’s main commercial areas, although station spacing and busy traffic mean that the final approach may involve walking or a short local ride. Central sections around Asok and Phrom Phong are relatively easy to explore on foot, while the sois around Thong Lo, Ekkamai and farther east can be long, uneven or interrupted by driveways and construction. History of Sukhumvit

The Road Named Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit Road forms part of Thailand’s Highway 3 and was named after Phra Bisal Sukhumvit, a senior public works official associated with the country’s road development. Built as a major eastward route from Bangkok, it connected the capital with settlements and provinces along the eastern seaboard. For much of its early modern history, the area beyond the older central city was comparatively low-rise, with canals, gardens, fields and scattered communities shaping the landscape. The road’s importance established the corridor’s enduring identity as a linear route rather than a traditional central quarter.

Suburban Growth Along the Sois

During the second half of the twentieth century, Bangkok’s growth pushed residential and commercial development along Sukhumvit Road. Side streets, or sois, filled with housing, small businesses, schools, hotels and later apartment buildings, while international companies and diplomatic activity helped give parts of central Sukhumvit a cosmopolitan character. Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo and Ekkamai each developed distinct patterns of commerce and residence, but remained connected by the main road and its branching lanes. The corridor’s mixed-use character emerged from this gradual expansion rather than from a single planned foundation.

The Skytrain Changes the Corridor

The opening of Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain in 1999 transformed movement along Sukhumvit. Stations on the Sukhumvit Line gave residents, workers and visitors a reliable alternative to the heavily congested road, encouraging denser development around key interchanges and commercial centres. Asok became especially important through its connection with the MRT at Sukhumvit station, while Phrom Phong, Thong Lo and Ekkamai gained greater visibility as destinations in their own right. Elevated rail infrastructure also became one of the defining visual elements of the modern corridor.

Expansion and Intensification

BTS extensions east of On Nut, opened in stages during the 2010s, brought more of the wider Sukhumvit corridor into Bangkok’s rapid-transit network and supported continued residential and commercial growth. High-rise condominiums, hotels, offices and large retail developments appeared alongside older shop-houses, markets and local services. The result is an area of strong contrasts: central stretches have become internationally oriented and increasingly expensive, while farther-east sections retain more everyday suburban rhythms. Redevelopment continues to reshape individual sois, but Sukhumvit remains defined by its layered mixture of transport infrastructure, commerce and established communities.
