Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving to the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast, start by heading to the A64 road. From there, take the A169 towards Pickering and then follow the signs to the A171. Continue on the A171 towards Whitby. Once in Whitby, follow the coastal road (A174) which will take you along the Heritage Coast. The destination is well-signposted, and you can park at various coastal spots such as Saltburn or Staithes. Note that parking fees may apply, typically around £2-£5 for a day depending on the location.

• Public Transportation

  To reach the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast using public transport, take a train to Whitby from York or Scarborough. Train services are operated by Northern Rail, and tickets can be purchased at the station or online. Upon arriving at Whitby, you can take local buses (Arriva Buses) that service coastal towns along the Heritage Coast. Make sure to check the bus schedule ahead of time, as services can be limited on weekends and holidays. A single bus fare is usually around £2-£3.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, cycling to the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast is a fantastic option. You can start from Pickering and follow the scenic route to Whitby, which is approximately 22 miles. The route is mostly along the A169 and then A171, which has dedicated cycling paths in parts. Make sure to wear a helmet and have a map or GPS device handy. Once in Whitby, you can lock your bike and explore the coast on foot.

• Walking

  If you're already in a nearby town like Staithes or Saltburn, walking is a great way to explore the beautiful coastline. There are well-marked walking trails along the coast, including the Cleveland Way, which offers stunning views of the sea. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as some sections may be challenging. Parking is available at various trailheads, but do check for any fees.
