The New Square

Until the mid-19th century, the area of today's Nowy Square (commonly known as the Jewish Square) was part of the Jewish town. The complex of streets, neglected and chaotically built up, was put in order, and the marked out square was called Nowy ("New"). The present buildings around the square were formed mostly at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the most characteristic element is the so-called Okrąglak, erected as a covered market hall.
