Miradouro do Cristo Rei do Garajau

The Cristo Rei Viewpoint, in Garajau, gives visitors an excellent partial view over Garajau, Funchal bay, Caniço de Baixo and the Atlantic Ocean. Located in Garajau, the Cristo Rei Viewpoint was given the name as a result of the existence of a Christ the King statue, which was erected to fulfil a promise made by Counsellor Aires de Ornelas. The majestic statue stands on top of a hill which drops into a ravine, towards the sea.

Santa Cruz

The village of Santa Cruz is one of the oldest on the island, dating from the beginning of the fifteenth century. The municipality was created on 26 June 1515, was granted city status on 2 August 1996. Santa Cruz is also home to some beautiful beaches such as the Praia das Palmeiras, a rocky beach with a great view from which to view the sunset and spend a fantastic day relaxing. The Machico beach, where you can find an alcove with sand brought over from Morocco if rocky beaches aren’t your thing. The Prainha Beach is also home to a sand beach; however, this is a black sand beach so if that doesn’t bother you then you’re in for a treat!

Pico do Facho viewpoint

The Pico do Facho viewpoint has a wide view over the Machico valley, the peaks of the central part of the island, the Desertas Islands and Ponta de São Lourenço The Pico do Facho Viewpoint is located north of Machico, before reaching the tunnel of Caniçal, along a path that leads up to the top of Pico do Facho. Historically, this was the place where huge bonfires were lit in order to alert the population of approaching enemy ships.

Pico do Arieiro

Pico do Arieiro is the third-highest peak on Madeira Island and is one of the most popular sunrise spots. Each morning crowds gather to watch the sun break through the thick sea of clouds that create an otherwordly atmosphere. The viewpoint is the start of the famous hiking route: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, which is one of the world’s best day hikes.
