The only island of Lake Como. In ancient times there were 9 churches on the island before the people of Como razed them to the ground in 1169. Today only the Baroque church of San Giovanni is still intact. Every year at the end of June, the flight of the island's inhabitants towards Varenna is remembered with a representation during which the lake is lit up as day by thousands of floating candles and at the end of the evening a fireworks display reconstructs the fire and the destruction of the island. The waters around the island are the perfect place to sip an aperitif or go for a swim
