Abadia de Montserrat

Montserrat is a rocky mountain located 50 km to the southwest of Barcelona. It is considered the most significant and important mountain of Catalonia. The etymology of Montserrat comes from Catalan Mont (mountain) and serrat (serrated). The mountain receives its name for its peculiar morphology. In 1987 Montserrat was declared a Natural Park to ensure its conservation. The highest peak is called Sant Jeroni (Saint Jerome) and stands at 1,236 meters above sea level. Besides the main monastery of Santa María de Montserrat, there is a great number of small churches and chapels, some of them abandoned. The main monastery stands at 720 meters above sea level. Nowadays there is a community of 80 monks that live there and follow the rule of Saint Benedict. When you arrive, you will enjoy an introduction to the history of the monastery.

Our trip to Montserrat was overall a good experience. The tour guide Sarah was nice and knowledgeable. She was able to answer all our questions and was clear in her instructions. The cogwheel train ride up was beautiful and the views are stunning. Make sure to sit on the right side of the train if you want the best pictures going up. Once we got to the town we had over an hour of free time. I recommended going on the hike to the Creu de Sant Miquel. Do not underestimate it! It is a steep hike that takes at least 30 minutes. Take breaks and bring lots of water! The tour through the basilica was a good length and we had more than enough time to take pictures. The AV show and alcohol tasting were overhyped. I would save these for the break after the basilica tour if you are interested. The local Farmer’s Market is adorable and worth walking through. Definitely try a small cup of Mato as it is the delicacy of this region. Overall a good tour but wish the cogwheel ride was both ways!

I love that the directions are very clear on times for leaving and arriving. Our guide (M) gave us facts about things we passed as we left the city and recommended food spots when we returned. The experience itself was very relaxing and truly a site to see.

Absolutely amazing tour and well worth it. I would recommend to mention that the bus (to get to and from Monserrat which is about an hour from Barcelona) is included in the price so we didn’t have to waste money for booking a rental car and not needing it.
