Monasterio de Santa Catalina

The Viceroy Francisco Toledo, during his visit to Arequipa, was informed by the Cabildo, about his desire years ago, to found a monastery of nuns. This motivated him to grant the necessary licenses for the foundation of the "Monastery of Private Nuns of the Order of Santa Catalina de Siena". Years later, Doña María de Guzmán, widow of Diego Hernández de Mendoza, beautiful, rich and young woman who had no children, decided to seclude herself in the monastery under construction, giving her all her possessions. On September 10, 1579, the Report and Capitulation of the Monastery's foundation signed between the City Council, Justice and Regiment and the Bishopric of Cusco was made, and the Town Council handed over the four lots owned by the city for its operation; naming Doña María de Guzmán "first town-dweller and prioress of said Monastery".

The brilliant colours are what you see in all the photos, and they are amazing, but get a guide to hear the history and stories....it will make it more than a simple instagram moment. One of our favourite sites.

Colorful, peaceful - did the self-paced audio tour. Loved the blue and red areas. Just came for Colca so was not expecting to see much in Arequipa

This place is really interesting and beautiful to look at. We spent a good few hours wandering around and found ourselves really invested in the history. You can also have a guided tour for an extra price which a lot of people were doing. It was well kept and there was lots of bathrooms and a cafe half way round which we stopped at for a drink. Definitely worth the ticket price.

Excellent tour of the historical monastery. Totally worth the 10 Sol for an hour guided tour and then you can explore on your own after.

This monastery is a very importan heritage of this beautiful city, built in white ashlar volcanic material with a lot of colonial art.

Went with a few friends, I feel like this place was a bit over rated. Maybe you will find it better if you are really into religious stuff but for me it felt like it was a lot of the same things, a lot of small rooms, kitchens and paintings. Not very entertaining I think. The surroundings was kind of nice, but the price of approximately 15 USD per person was a bit to expensive for this experience. Maybe more fun with a guide but that will cost you even more. / Martin 29
